Santee 116 sport
When you’ve got the best in-class recreational kayak, what do you do next? You think about how to make that design accessible to more people. Recreational means a lot of different things to different paddlers. For some folks, recreational means accessories, and accessories require space, so we took the Santee 116 and upsized it. We put some serious cubic inches in the cockpit and voila ― the Santee 116 Sport! A recreational kayak that gives you room for tackle boxes, rod tubes, dry bags and perhaps the family dog ― appropriately clad in a doggie PFD of course. In addition to the extra space in the cockpit, the Santee 116 Sport also features a sealed rear bulkhead and easy to use hinge hatch, and at 36.5 pounds you aren't sacrificing performance for extra space. Why? Because the 116 Sport rides on the same magic Swede form hull as the 116.

I chose this boat to use with my new Husky dog. I was going to get a Delta 1210 (great boat!) until my dog joined the family. I chose the Hurricane Santee Sport 116 because of 1) light weight -approx 35 lbs 2) larger cockpit to accommodate dog 3) 2 bulkheads for safety/flotation 4) Thermoform ABS plastic with scratch and UV resistance and great hydrostatic sliding qualities as compared to milk carton construction of polyethylene boats. I think this was a great choice. Plenty of room for dog. The cockpit is quite large without dog but problem of possible wave wash over short low profile deck solved by using the optional console -brilliant! Initial stability is moderate- secondary stability is excellent, tracking is outstanding for a short boat, easy to get up to maximum speed and effortless to go 5-6 mph (using my bike GPS app). The boat fits in back of my Jeep Wrangler 4 door with just a foot sticking out the window. Oh yes, very comfortable and adjustable seat, and nice foot pegs.
